[cross-posted from my Facebook]

I took the time to write this up for Facebook, so I thought I'd post it here as well. I was going to spread it out day by day, as is How The Meme Works, but instead I'm just going to finish this out in one go, as I'm rubbish at these things otherwise. Yeah.

Some answers will have both classic and new series answers, not that I don't think of them as the same show, but just because it'll make it easier to chose (plus, it'll help new series fans on my flist who don't know the classic series very well).

My mind is always changing about this stuff, too. So, an hour from now I might have different answers, but oh well.

My Doctor Who favorites...as of today... )
radiantbaby: (dr who -- john smith books)
In honor of Doctor Who's 50th anniversary year and more attempts to use LJ more (and to ramp up my excitement EVEN MOAR about the show returning in a few weeks!), I thought I'd attempt this meme. As a caveat, it may take a bit longer than 30 days to complete, but I'm going to give it a go, nonetheless.

Anyway, quotes! That's a tough decision, so I picked a few of my favorites:

'Do you know like we were saying, about the earth revolving? It's like when you're a kid, the first time they tell you that the world is turning and you just can't quite believe it 'cause everything looks like it's standing still. I can feel it, the turn of the earth. The ground beneath our feet is spinning at a thousand miles an hour. The entire planet is hurtling around the sun at sixty seven thousand miles an hour. And I can feel it. We're falling through space, you and me, clinging to the skin of this tiny little world. And, if we let go...That's who I am.'
-- Nine in Rose

'He's like fire and ice and rage. He's like the night and the storm in the heart of the sun. He's ancient and forever. He burns at the centre of time and can see the turn of the universe. And... he's wonderful.'
-- Tim Lattimer in Family of Blood

'Think about me when you're living your life one day after another, all in a neat pattern. Think about the homeless traveller in his old police box, his days like crazy paving.'
-- Seven in Dragonfire

'When you're a kid, they tell you it's all ... grow up. Get a job. Get married. Get a house. Have a kid, and that's it. But the truth is, the world is so much stranger than that. It's so much darker. And so much madder. And so much better.'
-- Elton Pope in Love and Monsters

And the rest of the days of the meme... )

Having a bad day, so I'm jumping on the feel-good-meme bandwagon:

One little compliment can make you feel amazing.

So give me a compliment, anything in the entire world, even that my shoelaces are pretty. Put this in your journal. (edit: if you care to.) And once you get some comments, put that entry in a memory or tag and when you are feeling down, just go to that entry and this will remind you how great you are. Comments are going to be screened so none of you will know if I'm ├╝ber-popular and get over 100 comments on this or a total loser who doesn't get any.

30 Days of Who Meme: Day 5 -- Your Favorite Companion

I always hate this question, as there are so many awesome companions to choose from. I do have a definite 'type' though, in general -- I usually prefer the brainy ones. Zoe, Liz, Nyssa...I could go on. But at the present moment [and for what's been a good two years or so now], I have to say that my favorite is Martha Jones.

I love that she's smart, capable, feisty, independent, and hella gorgeous. I love that though she can be strong and confident, she can also be a bit dorky and self-conscious. I love that she was able to function very well on her own when away from the Doctor [something we sadly don't see enough of anymore in the show, IMO] and also that she was able to finally walk away from him when she needed to after the whole YTNW tragedy.

Sadly, I think the writers of the series did a disservice to her character by shoving an awkward 'unrequited love' [which I don't think it actually was, but anyway] plotline into an otherwise awesome Team TARDIS and generally not developing her character as much as other New!Who companions, but I still love her nonetheless. Thankfully, there is not only fanfic, but also some great other mediums [such as the IDW comics] to still enjoy her in.

30 Days of Me Meme: Day 5 -- Your favorite quote

Ooh, another challenge. I think I'll just go with the one that is currently on my user profile:

"It's no good pretending that any relationship has a future if your record collections disagree violently or if your favorite films wouldn't even speak to each other if they met at a party."

-- Nick Hornby, High Fidelity

Yeah. I think, as a music geek, that really fits my life in many ways.

30 Days of Who Meme: Day 4 -- Your Favorite Doctor

Well, I admitted this on Twitter/Facebook recently, but I've come to the conclusion that -- at least as of this moment -- Eleven is my favorite Doctor. Some of you who know me as a big Ten(nant) have been/may be surprised by this, but after much deliberation, I feel it is definitely the case.

Now, don't get me wrong, I still adore Tennant and I loved the fanboyish-ness that he brought to the part of the Doctor, but at the end of the day, I've realized that I like my fanon ideas of Ten much more than the reality of Ten. I really think he suffered at the altar of a lot of bad writing and characterization and, in the end, I was just so ready to see him go (which made me very sad, honestly, because he was definitely 'my Doctor' for a long while -- damn you, RTD!).

When Eleven came on the scene, though, it was like heaving a sigh of relief and I didn't realize how tired I'd become of the angsty, whiney-ness of Ten until things started to finally be fun again in S5. I will always thank Moffat for rejuvenating my love for the Doctor in Eleven. Plus, I think Matt Smith has really just nailed it in the role. I know some people (even here on my flist) don't agree, but I've loved his otherworldly-old-man-in-a-young-mans-body portrayal of my favorite alien and really can't wait to see where he goes with it. Yays. :)

30 Days of Me Meme: Day 4 -- Your favorite book

I always have trouble with this question as a) I'm always bad at picking favorites and b) I tend to read many more non-fiction, reference books than I do fiction. I suppose the music geek in me might say Secret History of Rock: The Most Influential Bands You've Never Heard by Roni Sarig or even Old Stones, New Temples by Drew Campbell for the Hellenic-Pagan in me. I mostly devour books on Ancient Greece, Religion, Philosophy, Music, Cooking (especially of the ethnic variety), Sexuality, etc. We have a room sectioned off as a library in our home, so yeah, too many books to name that I love. :)

Aaaand now we're back to overdue memage:

30 Days of Who Meme: Day 3 -- Your Favorite New Series Episode

Well, if you'd asked me this question months ago, I probably would have said 'Human Nature'[/'Family of Blood']. I'm a bit weak for character studies, Doylist meta creeping into the narrative, and dark stuff, so that hit a lot of my kinks. Still, since S5 has aired, I have a new favorite -- "Amy's Choice'.

'Amy's Choice' is all frightfully meta and couldn't be something you'd do every week, of course, but I really loved taking that moment to really go there with a lot of issues about the Doctor, his lifestyle, and his relationships with his companions. I also thought Toby Jones as the 'Dreamlord' was brilliant. I've always loved his father, Freddie, as a character actor, but he showed that he could bring the awesome just as much.

I could really watch this episode on repeat (especially my favorite part when the Doctor is reaching for Amy in her grief, but can't bare touch her -- see icon). I think all of the characters are just pitch perfect and their portrayals are so brutally honest. Yes. Excellent stuff.

30 Days of Me Meme: Day 3 -- Your favorite television program

Hmm, well, I've definitely got a couple. My traditional pat answer was always The Prisoner (the original, of course) and The Tomorrow People (the first bit of telly I was ever truly fannish over, back when I was wee). I still love those, of course, but obviously as of late, my age-old love for Doctor Who got rekindled around S3 and I've been back in love with the show ever since. I've had a wobble here and there, don't get me wrong, but S5 has really cemented my love for the show and I'm really excited to see what S6 has up its sleeves. So, yeah, definitely my current favorite.

30 Days of Who Meme: Day 2 -- Your Favorite Classic Series Episode/Serial

Hmm, this is a really tough one as there as so many lovely gems to choose from. Way back, long before RTD got his hands on Who, I was a total Seven fangirl. I think in many ways he is still one of my favorite Doctors (my favorite on some days -- depends on my mood), so I decided to choose something from that era. It is so tempting to just say Season 26 as a whole, because...wow, but I should be more specific. I find myself undecided between the awesome that is 'The Curse of Fenric' and the crack that is 'Battlefield', so I think I will go for both as my answer. Yes.

30 Days of Me Meme: Day 2 -- Your Favorite Movie

My favorite movie is probably 'Heavenly Creatures,' with 'Night of the Hunter' as a very close second. Both films are great psychological pieces with some amazing acting and excellent cinematography. In particular I am drawn to 'Heavenly Creatures,' as there is so many similarities to my young fannish life amidst the minutes of the film (and to my relationship with my first love, Carol), that it's almost scarily autobiographical. Well, except for the ending (the beginning?), of course. But I'll leave that to you to discover.

So, I have a few friends on my flist taking a pic a day for the year and, while I think that's cool, I doubt I'd be able to keep something like that up. Still, I like the idea of photo-blogging, especially now that I have a nifty new phone with a fairly decent camera, so I decided to do a 'Week in the Life' of my life for the next few days.

As I said, my camera isn't amazing, but I thought it might be a fun thing to do this week. The two pics are technically from Jan 17 (though it's almost 1:00 AM of the 18th as I type this -- it's been a long day). They are just random shots from my day (just two this time -- I hope to post at least one a day).

So, I was chatting with [livejournal.com profile] justben tonight about crushes and I was saying how I really loved that meme from ages and ages ago where you fill out your LJ crush(es) and if they have chosen you as a crush as well, it will inform you that you have a "mutual crush." In some ways I think it's such a nice way to alleviate those fears of rejection by limiting your crush's knowledge of you to someone who is also crushing on you. Plus, it's also a nice ice breaker with the mutual crushes.

Anyway, I decided to find the old meme to see if it still works and was happy to see that it did. I updated my crush list because I thought it might be fun. You guys should try it out too. You never know what might come of it.

Oh, and for those of you who decide to add everyone on their friends list in order to determine who has a crush on them (a common occurance when the meme floated around before), I hope that you would not do so. I mean, it's no fun to see someone on your crush list who is only there to see that you have a crush on them. Of course you can do what you will, but I think that sticking to a list of your real crushes is much more fun.

So, on with the meme:

I am curious to see if anyone has a crush on me. It was fun to fill out all of mine. I had to laugh over all of the people on my own list that I am attracted to (there is quite a list!). I guess I am just a crushy sort of person...

Tagged from [livejournal.com profile] melissanmn:

RULES: Each player of this game starts off with 10 weird things/habits/little known facts about yourself. People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 10 weird habits/things/little known facts as well as state this rule clearly. At the end you need to choose 10 people to be tagged and list their names.

1. I was born premature and weighed only 2 lbs. 14 oz. at birth. My father says that I was so small that I could nearly fit completely in his hand, save for about half an inch or so on either end. I was mostly healthly, but had some breathing difficulties. Because of this and my weight (I think you need to be about 4-5 lbs. to leave the hospital), I spent the first month of my life in an incubator where I could only be touched by putting your hands through these gloves that were attached to the side of the incubator. On the plus side, I was the first (or one of) to use the hospital's new "rocking" incubator that would rock the babies inside. I think that got me a mention in the local paper.

2. While many people know that I was shot once, a lot of people don't know that I was in a really bad (near-fatal) car wreck when I was 24 which left me with a fractured left ankle (thankfully that was all considering how damaged my car was). As a result, I have a plate and screws in that ankle and it can get hurt if I walk or exercise on it too much.

3. I have nearly drowned four times in my life. Strangely enough, despite that I still swim from time to time.
details if you are curious )

4. As [livejournal.com profile] feygirl said in hers: "I crave salty things more than sweet things." Much more.

5. I am mildly afraid of the dark and when I am home (especially alone), I need to have nearly every light in the house on. Also, I always enter a room looking away until I turn on the light (i.e. I try to never look into a darkened room).

6. While most people think of me as someone who is not much of a "party-type" and pretty much a whitebread, librarian/valeditorian type, people would probably be surprised to know that I started smoking in 7th grade (I quit around 9th grade), I gave my first blow-job at 12 (to my boyfriend), I wasn't the best student (I only got a 945 on my SATs), I was just shy of being an alcoholic the way that I drank from the age of 17-25ish (I am amazed I never died of alcohol poisoning), I used to smoke pot all the time but stopped because of both my asthma and eventual boredom with it, I shoplifted a few times in high school and college, and I have had sex with lots and lots of people, even for a period with some of whom I did not even know their name or that was just using them for sex.

7. I have a total glasses fetish, especially those black-rimmed frames that indie boys and girls wear. Ever since I was in about 2nd grade, I have been known to completely fall for bespectacled persons and, more embarrassingly, at one point even had a fake pair that I would sometimes make ex-lovers that didn't wear glasses wear during sex.

8. While I have been with several women sexually and have been out as bisexual for about 15 years, with the exception of the budding developments with [livejournal.com profile] jescot, I have never had a girlfriend. Part of me thinks that sucks, because I think I would prefer to have more girlfriends than boyfriends. I mean, I love all my sweeties, but sometimes that is how I feel.

9. All of my fingers are double-jointed. This can be good or bad depending on circumstances (example: good = being able to bend them in neat ways, bad = can't make chords on a guitar easily because they "lock up" with the top joint trying to bend when I just want the whole finger to bend).

10. Up until about 4 or so years ago, I still had 4 baby teeth in my mouth (adult teeth never formed beneath them). The dentist said in my teens that they would probably fall out before I was 20. Instead most of them didn't fall out until I was about 30 (I still have one left -- the dentist wanted to pull it, but its still not loose so I asked him to leave it for now). As a result, I have three missing teeth in my mouth (which I hide from shame). I need to get implants or a bridge, but I need to save up as it is just so damned expensive to do so.

As for tagging, most of my friends list has done this already. If you haven't and want to, consider yourself tagged. :)

From all over my friend's list:

What American accent do you have?
Your Result: The Midland

"You have a Midland accent" is just another way of saying "you don't have an accent." You probably are from the Midland (Pennsylvania, southern Ohio, southern Indiana, southern Illinois, and Missouri) but then for all we know you could be from Florida or Charleston or one of those big southern cities like Atlanta or Dallas. You have a good voice for TV and radio.

What American accent do you have?

Well, I was born in Pennsylvania, though I spent a majority of my life (since around 3 years old) here in the Atlanta-area. Maybe it's because that's how my parent's spoke -- or at least my father. My mother was from California.

I have been told by people outside of Georgia that I have a southern accent though. Maybe it's inevitable living around here.

One more meme for the night.

From [livejournal.com profile] mailea, a fellow cool music-geek:

How indie are you?

You're just too cool for school, aren't you? You're pretty narrow minded
and opinionated with regards to music (and probably most other things
as well). But you're allowed to be, because you really are better
than everyone else. You take pride in obscurity.
You probably prefer vinyl too, you elitist bitch.

A little harsh, but also a little true.
