So, for my Doctor Who podcast Terminus, I've been working on a series called 'Festive Flashback' for the holidays, where I chat about the Doctor Who holiday episodes from the new series.

So as to not spam with posting each episode as it comes out, I'll try to only post notice for every four episodes instead. [If that's still an issue, give me a heads up and I'll stop/amend things differently]

Thanks and enjoy!

Below is the link to a compiled list of episodes as I post them:

radiantbaby: (dr who -- tardis animated [invasion])

So, this admittedly might not be the episode you were expecting from me right now – though I can assure you that me chatting about my 'Spyfall' feels is coming soon! HANG IN THERE!

But no, on this episode, instead I continue on with my journey through my 'Spark Joy' series – perhaps for the last time for quite a while? -- with a story I love muchly: 'The Girl in the Fireplace'!

Inside, you'll hear me going on and on for AGES (LONGEST. EPISODE. EVER?) -- all just full of squee and passion (I JUST LOVE THIS STORY, OK?!), with a side of (bleeped) cussing, some meta thoughts about things like polyamory and the nature of the Doctor/Companion relationship, tons and tons of frothing shippiness, and, admittedly, some not-so-nice feels about Rose Tyler thrown in here and there for good measure (sorry in advance!).

So, anyway, hold onto your hats, everyone, and enjoy the ride! I'm so glad to have you all aboard – yet again! -- on this Love Train! #choochoo

On this episode, I take a small little detour from my recent 'Spark Joy' series to share all of my squeeful adventures at DragonCon 2019 with you guys, including – spoilers! – meeting David Tennant, Freema Agyeman, and Catherine Tate, as well as several other things that happened at the convention. Heck, I even time-stamped them all for those of you wanting to skip to certain parts, as I can get a bit detailed. And loquacious.

I also take some time to finish up with answering my recent lengthy feedback from listener Vanessa (that I started on last episode). Now, admittedly I go on a bit of a ramble at times while doing so -- as I often do -- but it was still lots and lots of fun to do and I really hope you guys enjoy it, nonetheless. #chattycathy

So, yes, I hope you guys will all enjoy the ride! There's definitely lots of squee in store for you!

Yes, this is likely not the podcast episode that you're looking for. Fear not, though, as I do plan to review the episodes of Series 11 with Jodie, it's just that I'd planned to release this right before the new series started airing, but life intervened. Still, despite the awkward timing, I worked hard on it, so I still wanted to go ahead get it out.

Now, the subject matter is admittedly a bit dated as the con I'm discussing happened a few months back, but I had hoped to use this as basically a practice episode to get back into the swing of things.

So, anyway, I hope you will all join me for some reminiscing about my time at this year's Wholanta convention, as well as some bonus Happy Fandom Time squee and a mini, non-spoiler-y chat about David Tennant's film, 'Bad Samaritan'.

Glad to have you all aboard and do enjoy the ride!

Just on the tail end of a American Thanksgiving celebrations and chaos, here is the newest episode of 'Terminus', wherein I discuss the S4 story, 'The Fires of Pompeii'. All as a continuation, of course, of my ongoing 'Random Fandom Episode Generator' series.

Inside you'll find squee about regeneration-related anniversaries, Doctor Who on big screens in large dark rooms, Doctor and Donna shipping love, and lots and lots (possibly too much) of geeking about Classical Studies-type things.

Anyway, I hope you all will join me for my review and episode discussion. And, as always, glad to have you all aboard. Enjoy the ride!

On this episode, my discussion is probably equal parts raves and equal parts rants (I'm not so good at math, but that sounds about right) and overall just A WHOLE LOTTA FEELS. Seriously, this is probably the most shiptastic episode I've ever done (Martha/Doctor is still sort of my OTP), so that shippy aspect could possibly put people off, but, hey, it's how I feel about the episode and Martha's tenure on the show, so I had to just go with it to be authentic. *shrug*

Anyway, please won't you join me as I squee about the long-lost 'Doctor Who Confidential' series and also about All Things Martha (because, really, Competency is Sexy!), get nostalgic about the old days of 'Doctor Who' on PBS in North America from my youth, pump my fist in the air for #TeamJulia (it'll make sense once you listen), rant kind of a lot about RTD-style 'Doctor Who' (I know, what a surprise!), and, finally, embarrass myself with a bonus fanmix-song I made ages ago and pulled from the dusty vault of yesteryear in honor of this episode.

So, yeah, enjoy the ride!

radiantbaby: (dr who -- ten b&w geek glasses sexy)
Er, I guess I need to get back to that Doctor Who meme I started. This last week or so, I've been very scattered. Guess I'll try to get to it before bed.

Anyway, speaking of Doctor Who, I received my copy of Chicks Unravel Time in the mail today (along with some tins of sardines and a set of Susanne Somer's Thighmaster and Buttmaster -- don't judge me!). I'm hoping to dig into it more in the coming days (or even when I'm at [livejournal.com profile] frolicon next weekend), but so far I started to read the essay entitled 'David Tennant's Bum'.

The subject -- at least in the title -- is something I'm rather fond of and though I'm shirking the tone set up by the publishers by not reading it from the beginning (they purposely chose the order of the essays), I thought it would be a fun starting point.

Well, maybe not.

I'm finding myself twitching with all of the accolades being heaped on the Tenth Doctor in the essay. I mean, overall I do like him as a Doctor, but to praise him for things like how he doesn't balk at or belittle intelligence in others (*cough*Martha*cough*) makes me side-eye it a bit. In fact, it's an essay that is only a few pages long, though its taken me hours to read it through (I'm still not done), because I have to sit the book down and Be Annoyed for a few minutes about how, no, actually the Tenth Doctor let me down as a fan in many ways and while I'm a huge-huge-huge fan of Tennant himself, I really do think that the writing failed his character in the Tenth Doctor and how Ten, at the end of the day, was really quite an ass*. Yes, he had his good moments, and honestly I try to edit the bad ones out in my head, but now that I'm in the era of a much nicer, much more accepting Doctor in Eleven, Ten's shortcomings are all the more glaring to me.

Back when I watched his tenure the first time around, I (mostly) ignored some of his issues, hoping that he would learn from them eventually, that he would grow past the incessant emo man!pain (though admittedly Tennant is ever-so-pretty when he angsts, even if it was a bit overdone) and ill-treatment of most everyone who was not!Rose. That somehow he would be My Doctor again. And in my head!canon he did become that (in the realm of fan fiction fix-it fics, of course), but ultimately it is profoundly sad for me that I never saw that resolution on-screen, that he went out in the end even worse than he ever was (he was frankly dead to me after the ranting at Wilf during his childish tantrum and I just chose to believe the bizarre events of 'The End of Time' were just some sort of fever dream of his). And even the utter glory of David Tennant's bum -- as perfectly shaped as it is -- can't fix that.

* Yes, yes. I know the Doctor has always been a bit of an ass, sometimes in more instances and incarnations than others, but I hate how the show tries to tell me that the Tenth Doctor isn't one, when he clearly is. For example, I watched 'Smith and Jones' again the other night (arguably one of my all-time favorite episodes) and I hate the moment where he rudely dismisses the other medical student with Martha when the hospital is now on the Moon. 'Not her, she'd hold us up' is not something My Doctor would say. I'm so happy for the return of 'You know in 900 years of time and space, I've never met anyone who wasn't important before.' That's my Doctor speaking.
radiantbaby: (this is england -- Lol ('86))
I just posted this big comment in [livejournal.com profile] chloris's journal, so I thought I'd cross-post it here. It's a bit about my thoughts on Tennant's 'True Love' episode. In short, I loved the episode and have watched it a few times. Admittedly, I'm really easy for anything with Vicky McClure and a pretty David Tennant, plus I think it explored some interesting darker aspects of romantic relationships. All I keep seeing is people exclaiming 'If you loved someone, you wouldn't cheat on them!', but unfortunately I think that is more something people hope would be the case and that the reality is that things can occasionally be more complicated than that.

I fully confess that I have cheated before (several times, in fact, back in my 20s with different lovers), so I have been That Person. I wasn't an evil person, of course, but I was young, misguided, broken, and immature (none of which I would have described myself with back then, but that's hindsight for you). Still, while I don't agree with my actions in the least bit, I can also see why I did so in each circumstance. I was learning things about myself, about my needs, and about how I fit in relationships. I was testing boundaries, but I didn't have the sense to see that I was doing it very poorly.

It was truly an Ugly Life Lesson for me, as I think it is for many people in similar situations.

Anyway, here is what I said on my friends LJ:

More thoughts, including spoilers )

I originally posted this in a comment on [livejournal.com profile] tennant_love, but it came out sounding a bit like a 'proper' review, so I thought I'd post it here as well.

My thoughts on 'Playhouse Presents: The Minor Character' -- SPOILERS INCLUDED )
radiantbaby: (dr who -- eleven/amy | forest)
I should really be catching up on reading entries and replying to comments I've received, but the tabs I have open are getting out of control, so here's a Doctor Who dump:

+ FIRST OFF: NEW DOCTOR WHO S6 FULL-LENGTH TRAILER MADE OF AWESOMENESS AND WIN! I might have hyperventilated a bit watching it, especially the bit at :37! IS IT S6 TIEM YET?? ETA: So, DigitalSpy did another scene-by-scene piece on the trailer. Eee!

[spoilers may turn up in the comments due to this, but I had to share my CAPSLOCK JOY]

+ The Lonely God is a Jerk. Old meta is old, but I just discovered it myself, so I thought I'd share for anyone interested.

+ I was hopping around blogs the other day and left this open in a tab because I liked what she had to say about Amy. For my own reference, I thought I'd quote my favorite excerpt here:

'I define a successful female character as a woman with agency who is portrayed as a multi-faceted person. A person who sometimes talks about men she loves, but sometimes doesn’t. A person who is sometimes fearless, but sometimes isn’t. A person who sometimes does the right thing, but sometimes doesn’t. Amy certainly has agency. The decision to travel in the TARDIS was her own, and she could never be told to do something she didn’t want to do. She traveled with a boyfriend, and now has a husband, yet it is clear that he is only (albeit the most important) part of her life. Her life doesn’t revolve around him, or even The Doctor.

And for every time she’s brilliant, she does something dumb. For every time she saves the day, she makes a mistake. She’s complex, she’s flawed, and she’s wonderfully real and easy to relate to even though she has looks many women would kill for. By the end of the fifth series, she is also a mature woman who has learned the value of vulnerability, and that it is very different from weakness. She is sort of a modern Katherine from
The Taming of the Shrew.'

YES! QFT, yo.

+ I bought this shirt the other day. Yes, I am a dork. Now, I kind of want to buy one [all?] of these.

+ As if I wasn't already interested in going to see the remake of 'Fright Night' with David Tennant [I'm a big fan of the original, okay?], then this blog post had to come along AND MAKE IT IMPERATIVE. [warning for fangirlishness, quite a bit of titillation, and very low-slung tight trousers]

+ Semi-related-gossipy-aside: I've heard through the grapevine that Tennant and Georgia had a baby girl the other day. Hope they're at least getting a little sleep.
radiantbaby: (dr who -- sja | ten/rani | distance)
Watching SJA's The Death of the Doctor reminded me that I'd made a few icons of Ten and Rani just after The Wedding of Sarah Jane Smith aired last year [have a half-finished, angsty story of older!Rani traveling with Ten on my hard-drive which had inspired the icons].

Anyway, I thought some people might be interested in them.

I also made a handful of Single Father icons -- mostly of Dave/Sarah, who I ship like burning. They were mostly just me playing around with some promo photos, but since there has been a real dearth in Single Father icons floating about (COME ON FANDOM, PANDER TO MY INTERESTS! *wink*), I thought I'd share those as well.

So, I posted this ages ago at [livejournal.com profile] dwrewatch, but I noticed the other night they were rebooting the community, so I wanted to repost it in my personal journal in case they delete old posts.

It's a meta-ish review of 'Girl in the Fireplace' from a polyamorous perspective, so I thought it might be of interest to some of you. I thought of also posting it somewhere like [livejournal.com profile] metatardis, but I wasn't sure if it was 'meta enough' just mostly being an episode review.

Anyway, here it is:
