30 Days of Who Meme: Day 4 -- Your Favorite Doctor
Well, I admitted this on Twitter/Facebook recently, but I've come to the conclusion that -- at least as of this moment -- Eleven is my favorite Doctor. Some of you who know me as a big Ten(nant) have been/may be surprised by this, but after much deliberation, I feel it is definitely the case.
Now, don't get me wrong, I still adore Tennant and I loved the fanboyish-ness that he brought to the part of the Doctor, but at the end of the day, I've realized that I like my fanon ideas of Ten much more than the reality of Ten. I really think he suffered at the altar of a lot of bad writing and characterization and, in the end, I was just so ready to see him go (which made me very sad, honestly, because he was definitely 'my Doctor' for a long while -- damn you, RTD!).
When Eleven came on the scene, though, it was like heaving a sigh of relief and I didn't realize how tired I'd become of the angsty, whiney-ness of Ten until things started to finally be fun again in S5. I will always thank Moffat for rejuvenating my love for the Doctor in Eleven. Plus, I think Matt Smith has really just nailed it in the role. I know some people (even here on my flist) don't agree, but I've loved his otherworldly-old-man-in-a-young-mans-body portrayal of my favorite alien and really can't wait to see where he goes with it. Yays. :)

30 Days of Me Meme: Day 4 -- Your favorite book
I always have trouble with this question as a) I'm always bad at picking favorites and b) I tend to read many more non-fiction, reference books than I do fiction. I suppose the music geek in me might say Secret History of Rock: The Most Influential Bands You've Never Heard by Roni Sarig or even Old Stones, New Temples by Drew Campbell for the Hellenic-Pagan in me. I mostly devour books on Ancient Greece, Religion, Philosophy, Music, Cooking (especially of the ethnic variety), Sexuality, etc. We have a room sectioned off as a library in our home, so yeah, too many books to name that I love. :)

OMG! So much yes! I liked Ten as well but towards the end where he is becoming the King of Angst, I just wanted to scream, "Enough Already! We get it!"
Needless to say, when his time to go, I was greatly relieved.

Date: 2010-08-20 09:08 am (UTC)Oh god, yes. I mean, yes, he is the last of the Time Lords, I get that, but I didn't totally get his loneliness -- especially when most of it was self-inflicted by him pushing people away in the first place. He'd mourn Rose, but then hurt others because he was in mourning.
It made me sad, because in the end, he wasn't the Doctor to me. That ranty-rant at Wilf after he tapped on the glass just killed his character for me. I was all 'cry moar' and then I thought his death scene went on far too long and was too indulgent. I am so angry at RTD for making me hate Ten in the end. He had so much promise and wasted potential.
God, I wish he'd had at least one year under Moffat to fix some of his issues. Oh well, there's always fanfic!Ten. :(

(And hope my net connection doesn't fall over and cause the comment to be eaten by the Vortisaurs of Cyberspace!)
While I was definitely hacked off by how self indulgent Rusty had become over Ten and by the way he spoilt Ten as the Doctor, I can't help still loving him - which is entirely down to David T's manful attempts to make the character less of a bastard than Rusty wanted him to be... Fortunately, though, Matt Smith proved equally as good in the role, despite not being a massive fanboy.
Personally I love Three, audio!Six, Eight, Nine, Ten and Eleven - they all have aspects that particuarly appeal to me.
I always used to say my favourite book is The Lord of the Rings, but I'm not sure I should continue making that claim - it's been a few years since I last re-read it! Mind you, it's certainly my most read book - something like 25 times in 26 years (one year I read it three times over the space of nine months!)

Date: 2010-08-20 10:11 am (UTC)Oh, and I definitely agree that David did his best to soften Ten's sharp edges. You can really see it in S3 alongside Martha when he's saying he's not interested in her, but his eyes and body language tell a completely different story. I think I'll always have a soft spot for him, I'm just not sure if he's my favorite right now. When he was good, he was really good, though, and I think he'll always rank high in my list along with Seven and Eleven. I just wish he didn't have such wasted potential -- that is what I mourn the most. I think being saddled with the Rose storyline throughout his tenure really tarred him for me. *sad sigh*
You've read The Lord of the Rings 25 times? Wow! I am such a bad geek -- I've actually never read the book(s), nor have I seen the film(s). I really do plan to get around to it though, someday. *shameface*

Date: 2010-08-20 10:16 am (UTC)Oh, believe me, I totally understand what you're saying about Ten - Rusty f*cked up good and proper with that crappy Doctor/Rose OTP schtick he had going on...
Alas, I am SUCH a Tolkien Nerd, I've even read The Silmarillion and ALL 12 volumes of the History of Middle Earth!! (This strikes me as fannish obsessiveness that's beyond the sane! :D) Don't feel bad about not having read Lord of the Rings though - it's certainly not to everyone's taste.

- Oh, I totally feel you on that one. RTD's heavy handed and overthetop epicness of End of Time just made me really sluggish and blah, but when Eleven burst onto the scene and the music went from oppressive choral sorrow to exciting 'omigodwatchagonnadonow?!', DW became exciting again!
