it was a gas!
Sep. 25th, 2003 07:54 pmwell, it wouldn't be me if i weren't coming to you from yet another near death experience (and my roommate wonders why the movie "final destination 2" scares me).
the thing is that i came home yesterday and smelled gas in the house. i then proceeded to call my roommate because i knew he had been home earlier that day for when the gas guy came by to turn our gas back on (with his hectic life, he had neglected to pay the gas bill, so we were without gas about 2 days). he told me that the gas guy said that there might be a bit of a lingering smell from everything being turned on, but just to open your windows and air out the place. so, i hung up, opened a bunch of windows, turned on the ceiling fans, and then proceeded to go to the kitchen and play on the computer for a while (we have a really big kitchen, so that is where we actually keep the computer and its desk).
so, anyway, that was around 7:00 or so and my roommate chris came home about 11:00. when he did he said that he smelled gas coming up the stairs into the house as well as in the living room. unfortunately i did not. i guess that i had adjusted to the smell. we hemmed and hawed about what to do and if the house really was still airing out or if something more serious was happening. at about 11:30 we decided to call the gas company and have them send someone out here. the man said to "get out of the house."
so, there chris and i were, sitting on the steps outside, him luckily fully dressed, but me in some white flannel teddy-bear pjs and my pilsbury dough-boy slippers. it was a bit embarrassing, and cold. the guy came around 12:00 or so and chris was then embarrassed by the bright yellow flashing light he had on his truck ("oh, what are the neighbors going to think?").
the guy walked up the stairs and into the house and we asked him if it still smelled (chris had adjusted by this time too, so he couldn't smell it either). the man's response? "oh yes, it is very strong!" then he went about the house with a meter, trying to determine the cause of the gas. we all immediately thought it was coming from the stove, especially after chris had checked it when he got home and one of the burners was just slightly turned on and probably pumping gas out into the kitchen and living room. actually, the guy said it wasn't coming from there and for a good thirty minutes seemed to be unable to determine where it was coming from.
finally, after spending some time down in our crawl space underneath the house, it was determined that some piece that linked the air conditioner and heater had malfunctioned and basically the air conditioner was pumping gas into the house through all of the air vents. the man closed off the valve so that it would discontinue and told us we would need to get an HVAC guy to fix it before we could use the heater again.
it was relieving to finally know what the problem was, but scary to think about how dangerous things could have turned out. even while the guy was outside, one of our neighbors had come out and mentioned that he had smelled gas as well (which apparently was coming from the outtake vent located between our houses). i mean, something told me to go out to dinner last night instead of cooking, i am so glad that i did. also, the two of us were so close to almost just going to bed instead of calling and, of course, the frightening thing is that we might not have woken up this morning.
after everything ended, i did feel a bit light-headed, but i just attributed it to being sleepy. still, when i got into work this morning, my throat hurt and i felt really nauseated. i tried to stick it out, but then finally told my boss what happened and went home about 1:00 to lay down for a bit. i felt weird going home bcause it sounds like such a made-up story, though i can easily provide documentation from the gas guy of his visit.
i just got up a little while ago after going to bed around 4:00. i am still a bit tired, but i think i am feeling better.
ick. what a day!
on another note, since death came so close to me again, i thought i'd share this funny that my buddy
barmaid1 had sent me. it had me in stitches!
