On Demand Laziness

I guess I needed a bit of a lazy evening last night. Originally it was going to be my usual date night with
justben, but with his programming homework for his new job prospect, we moved the date night forward to Thursday so that he could be left alone to focus on his work.
Anyway, I had some plans for the evening regarding some things that I wanted to get done around the place, but once I finally got in and sat on the couch, I was pretty dead for the night...
I had stopped at the store "Old Time Pottery" (basically like a "Michael's") on the way home on a search for some Greco-Roman style pottery and perhaps a wall map (something I'll probably need to get at an office supply store it seems). Regarding the wall map, I am hoping for one of just the Southeast so that I can mark with pushpins where everyone in my Y!group lives for easier planning of group socials, but I can easily fold up one of the entire U.S. if need be.
As for the Greco-Roman pottery, I had been glancing online at Greek-style vases earlier in the day (for the flowers I have been receiving on dates and such -- so that I might forgo the ice-tea pitcher I have been using) and I saw a bunch of ones that I thought would be great for use of libations. I started thinking in my head about constructing my altar (which mostly hasn't been done since I am moving in with Ben soon and I would hate to construct one and then have to take it right back down to move), so I thought I would go out there and see what sort of things they had.
I actually found some cool things there -- they had the cheap little columns for plants that I might pick up later for my altar and few Greco-roman plaster looking items. I grabbed a small cup-like plaster piece for libations to put on my altar. I'll probably replace it with something nicer later, but it was only $1.99, so it's perfect for now. I also grabbed this stone pedestal that looks like the bottom of a column. I want to perhaps put my bust of Artemis on it on my altar and it was under $10.00, so it's something I can find a another use for if need be. The thing is totally heavy though! Lugging that from the store to the car and then from the car to the apartment wore out my already exhausted body (life and work stress has been really taking it's toll on me physically). As for a vase, I just picked up a pretty non-descript one as I was somewhat overwhelmed by the selection and it was near closing time. With the three items, I got out of there about only paying about $20.00 for everything, so I was quite happy about my adventure.
As I said, I was pretty exhausted once I finally got home. I sat on the couch hoping to get a little rest before doing the tasks around the apartment I had hoped to accomplish, but the more I sat, the more I knew I wasn't moving for the rest of the evening (in fact, to relate how tired I was, it took me hours to go online and check email and LJ and such and that is usually something I do almost immediately when I get home).
I flipped on the television and while watching, I saw a television commercial for Comcast's "On Demand" service. I am so rarely home to watch television, so I'd never actually pressed the "On Demand" button on my remote, so I thought I would give it a try. I figured it was probably just a normal "pay per view" feature, but I was curious anyway. Immediately upon going to that menu I saw an ad for a complimentary Duran Duran concert in the "Concert" features. Sweet!, I thought, as they are one of my favorite bands. I made a mental note to check it out after checking out what else they had to offer.
Then I clicked around and found not only "pay per view" items, but several free things as well such a movies, television specials, instructional pieces (they had guitar lessons for free!), etc. One of the free movies was the classic "Jason and the Argonauts." I had never seen it before (or if I had it was when I was young as I didn't remember seeing it) and I knew it was the same guy who did special effects on the film, "Clash of the Titans," so that interested me. Plus, it's Greek mythology, so how could I resist? I reheated my leftover Greek food from the night before (two spanakopitas and some moussaka) and settled in with my Greek food and Greek film. *giggle* The movie was somewhat cheesy, but I actually did enjoy it and would recommend it.
Afterward, I selected to watch the Duran Duran "concert." It was only a half-hour, so I was curious about it. It actually turned out to be a severely edited version of the 1984 tour documentary "Sing Blue Silver," which in it's original form, it over an hour or so long. I had to laugh at the editing as it was quite humorous. Then, after the Duran Duran concert, I saw they had a half-hour version of the White Stripes show "Under the Blackpool Lights," so I watched that as I finally checked my email. And after that show, I clicked around through their music listings and found "MTV2 On Demand" and was able to watch both the new Brendan Benson and Decememberists videos. It was all so cool!
Late in the evening, I finally settled in before bed by watching a special/film on "Sundance On Demand" called "Tokyo Girls" that was about being a hostess in Japan (i.e. Westerners that work in "conversation bars" in Japan that get paid lost of money in a evening just because they speak English and are white). It was truly intriguing as I have always had a big fascination with Japanese culture and remember looking into hostessing when I was researching the JET Program years back to teach English conversation in Japan. I could probably never be a hostess as I am not very white looking -- they want tall blondes, mostly. It's all good though, it seems like a difficult job.
So, then, after all of my On Demand adventures, I dragged myself into bed and crashed into a deep, wonderful sleep. Being able to choose things to watch on the television was a bit like crack. I could see that being dangerous in my future. ;)
All in all, it was a very lovely evening, albeit terribly lazy!
