i have been really bad about updating lately. it seems i always do that whenever i am keeping some sort of journal -- i start with much enthusiasm and it eventually dwindles down to none. oh well. still, i'll just keep posting as i can. [ed note: in fact, i started writing this post two days ago and just not got to finish it up and post it].
i caught whirlwind heat on monday night over at echo lounge. it was both an excellent and terrible idea. of course, i wanted to see them again after their great performance with the white stripes this summer, but also because i completely [heart] their album. i, of course, was not also factoring in that it would be a late, late show on a "school night." i ended up getting in around 2:00 AM, so needless to say, i was a zombie at the office on tuesday!
the show was great though. i was curious what the turnout would be like, but it wasn't so bad (about 30 - 50 people or so). i was a bit nervous when i showed up about 9:30 and, with the exception of the bands, their entourage, and the staff, was the only person there. luckily people soon began to drift in, mostly for the two opening bands. i had the honor of sitting near a cute little indie boy who provided some nice eye candy. he had a big "x" on his hand though, so i figured he was probably straight-edge or jailbait. *sigh* he sure was nice to look at though.
the first two bands were alright, the first one far better than the cacophony of the second one. i was beginning to think that i was going to fall asleep by the time WWH came on around 12:30ish. still, as soon as the show began, all my senses lept to attention and the excitement if the show permeated my being. david was, as always, pure sex as a performer and each song was executed with great enthusiasm and vigor. the only thing i hated was that it seemed to end too quickly, but i suppose with their small repetoire it was inevitable.
speaking of music, i just found out that the lovely jason falkner is playing about again with roger manning jr. (of jellyfish, beck, and moog cookbook fame) and brian reitzell (of redd kross fame) as the band tv eyes. i totally [heart] jason falkner. funny, i never even realized that he had collaborated with brendan benson (even co-writing and co-producing his 2002 release lapalco). i mean, i suppose i shouldn't really have been surprised and they are not only very similar, but jason's got his fingers in so many pies i can only imagine the discography of albums he has participated on in some way.
i also just got a double son house collection this week (father of the delta blues: the complete 1965 recordings). it is really compelling and has completely worked its way under my skin. it was great to hear him singing songs so many others have covered and to hear the passion of his voice. i am definitely going to have to get his earlier recordings.
oh yes, i had the absolute best sandwich i have ever had for lunch today. it was at a somewhat new place around the/ corner from my house called pangaea, which is a cool place for "international cuisine and global grub" that specializes in sandwiches from around the world. i had been meaning to drop by there as soon as i could before moving. the menu was full of mouth-watering choices, but today i chose the prosciutto and cheese panini. it was amazing -- pressed italian bread, prosciutto, provolone, marinated artichokes, lettuce, tomato, whole grain mustard, and mayo. yum. i am about to go all lo-carb to beat this weight loss plateau, so it was a nice farewell to bread (albeit a bit bittersweet!).
well, enough rambling...i'll try and update again soon...
