If you use Photoshop, one really easy way to fix a picture that looks washed out is to use a Selective Colour layer to darken the neutrals. In Photoshop CS3 and before, go to Layers --> Adjustment Layers --> Selective Colour, choose "Neutrals" from the drop-down box and increase the black setting until you're happy with the results; in CS4, the default workspace has a selection of adjustment layers, and you can pick Selective Colour from that. :)
(Of course, if you don't use Photoshop, all of that was pretty useless information... :P)
