Happy Hallowe'en and Samhain!

To everyone:

Have a Happy...

Yes, yes, I know that's a picture of the band, but a happy Glen Danzig should count for something too, yeah? ;)

Then again, maybe not.

I mean his mispronunciation of the band's name in my youth (they pronounced it as ""Sam-Hane") was something that I had to quickly unlearn once I became pagan...

Same here. :P

(I had this really annoying "hipper than thou" boyfriend who defended Mr. Danzig, by insisting there was this one song in which he pronounces it correctly. I was never really bothered enough to go find out.)

I should know better, but don't. How is it supposed to be pronounced?

Back in the day, I don't think I knew a single person who pronounced it properly. By weird coincidence, the one person I knew who pronounced Samhain properly, was unfamiliar with the band. =)

It's okay, unless you are familiar with it, you would think it was "sam-hane".

It's actually pronounced more like "sow-win" (where the "sow" rhymes with "cow" or "ow", like when you hurt yourself). Or at least that is how its pronouced by many pagans. I am sure it sounds a bit different coming from a Celt.

As I said to [livejournal.com profile] cyanidefish:
